HEAT Coaches
James Resare – Head Coach
James joined the Hillsboro Swim Team in September of 2001. He quickly earned the Head Age-Group coaching responsibilities, a position that he held for over five years. In June 2006, Coach James was hired as the Head Coach of the Hillsboro Swim Team.
James started his competitive swimming career at the age of 14 with the Oregon City Swim Team. While attending college, James started his coaching career by “helping out” with coaching duties on the Oregon City Swim Team. Coaching quickly became more addictive and fun than swimming was for James. James coached for OCST for four years. In addition to his duties at OCST, James was the Head Coach of the Gladstone High School Swim Team for four years and was a staff member of the Oregon Zone team in 2001, 2002, and in 2004.
Some of Coach James’ coaching accomplishments include:
- multiple Oregon Age Group State champions
- multiple Age Group Regional champions
- multiple Western Zone champions
- multiple Pacific Northwest Senior Sectional finalists and champions
- USA Swimming Spring Championship finalists
- USA Swimming Junior National finalists
- multiple NCSA Junior National A finalists and medalists
- USA Swimming Senior National Finalists
Two HEAT athletes under James’ charge have been selected for international teams:
- Austin Ringquist for the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore
- Ethan Heasley for the 2018 Junior Open Water World Championships, and the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships
Along with these feats, Coach James’ swimmers have also achieved:
- Bronze medal at Junior Pan Pacs – 400 FR
- USA Swimming Olympic Trial time standards
- Multiple USA Swimming Top 10 (previously Top 16) National Reportable Swims, including four #1 Rankings.
- Over 100 Oregon Swimming records
- Athlete named to the USA Swimming National Junior Team
Coach James has been recognized by his peers and has achieved the following honors:
- 2007: Oregon Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year
- 2008: American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Age Group Coach of the Year for Oregon
- 2016: Oregon Swimming Co-Senior Coach of the Year
- 2017: Oregon Swimming Senior Coach of the Year
- 2018: Named to the USA Swimming National Junior Team Coaches list
- 2018: Oregon Swimming Co-Senior Coach of the Year
Matt Viglione – Pre-Senior and Age Group Coach
Matt started coaching with the Hillsboro HEAT in September 2008. He was born in New York and also lived in New Mexico before be moved to Oregon in 2001. He was a competitive swimmer for over 14 years with Duke City Aquatics in New Mexico and both the Tualatin Hills Swim Club and the HEAT in Oregon. Matt was a National Qualifier in the 100 and 200-meter breaststrokes and also swam IM events.
Matt attended Oregon State University where he graduated in September 2008 with a B.S. in General Science. He swam during the summers with the HEAT while attending OSU. Matt is also a graduate of Portland State University, with a Master's degree in Health Administration.
Matt’s interests outside the pool include football, fishing, hunting, camping, and wake-boarding. He lives in Portland with his wife, Chelsea, and his daugther, Stella.
Kevin Cleary – Senior and Pre-Senior Coach
Kevin joined the HEAT coaching staff in April of 2012. He began his swimming career as a young child with St. Mary of the Valley’s CYO team and took up swimming again for Jesuit High School, where he was a four-year letterman. After his sophomore season, he joined the Tualatin Hills Thunderbolts for the remainder of his high school career. Kevin was elected as team captain for Jesuit and swam on a state-qualifying relay during his senior season.
Kevin began his coaching career with the Tualatin Hills Splash Program in 2004. Many of his swimmers went on to join year-round swim clubs. In 2009, he became the assistant swim coach for Hillsboro High School and accepted the position of Head Coach in 2018. Kevin also coaches for Liberty High School. In 2011, Kevin joined the coaching staff of the Tualatin Hills Barracudas Masters team. He is a Level II coach for both the American Swim Coaches Association and United States Masters Swimming.
Kevin is a longtime strength and conditioning student, and holds StrongFirst certifications in the kettlebell (SFG Level 2), barbell (SFL) and bodyweight (SFB) disciplines, giving him the title of StrongFirst Elite.
Kevin has been an active Masters swimmer since 2003, and has traveled across the country and the world to compete. Some of his achievements include:
- USMS All-American:
- 400-LCM medley relay (2008, 2012)
- 200-SCM butterfly (2012)
- 4 individual National championships:
- 200-LCM butterfly (2008, 2011, 2016)
- 800-LCM freestyle (2009)
- 2017 World Masters Games silver medalist
- FINA Masters world record (400-SCM medley relay)
- Over 60 USMS National top ten times
Outside of coaching and training, Kevin is involved in martial arts, and enjoys movies, reading, and outdoor excursions.
Andrew joined the HEAT coaching staff in September 2025. He is a lifelong aquatics advocate, with a decade of competitive swimming experience and almost twenty years in aquatics professionally. His coaching career includes being the Head Coach at VillaSport Swim Team. In his time there, he developed one of the best age group programs in the state, producing many state and regionally ranked athletes. His goal as a coach is to influence kids to strive for more than they think they're capable of, regardless of their times! His philosophy is that active technical coaching, making practice engaging and fun, and goal setting, are the keys to unlocking an athlete's fullest potential.
Outside of the pool, Andrew is a Beaverton/Portland native with a BS in Sociology from Portland State University. He is married to Ashleigh and they have a baby daughter, Chloe. For fun, he likes to see live music, go to the Oregon coast, travel, and spend time with friends and family.
Laila Kayfes – Devy Coach
Laila joined the HEAT coaching staff in September 2019, bringing 10 years of competitive swimming experience with her as a former member of Tualatin Hills Swim Club. She is a graduate of Portland State University with a degree in Human Resources Management, and she currently works in HR for an engineering company, in addition to her coaching duties.
Daren Sehorn – Pre-Senior and Age Group Coach
Daren swam for the HEAT for 10 years before joining the coaching staff in 2024. He is currently attending Portland State University to get a degree in Elementary Education, while also working as a lifeguard at the SHARC.
