Welcome to the Hillsboro Heat Visitors Page
General Team Information
The Hillsboro HEAT Swim Team (HST) offers instruction and positive enforcement in all levels of competitive swimming for children ages six and over. Your child, if ready, will be placed in one of our age group programs depending on his or her age and swimming ability. Since each of our coaches has experience working with children, as well as in competitive swimming, we are able to provide the proper balance of stroke instruction, cardiovascular training, and fun! Each Swimmer will be encouraged to achieve his or her full potential, irrespective of age or athletic ability. ALL of our athletes are important.
The Hillsboro HEAT Swim Team trains at the Shute Park Aquatic and Recreation Center (SHARC). The address to the center is 953 SE Maple St. in Hillsboro. A map to the facility can be found hereAs a member of United States Swimming , the Hillsboro Heat Swim Team is an age group and senior swimming program that provides for the competitive swimming needs of the youth of the surrounding communities. The HEAT provides an environment where each swimmer can develop to his or her fullest, both as a swimmer, and as a person. Promoting conditioning, good nutrition, good health, a positive self-esteem, and an unwillingness to be average are the goals HEAT has set for itself.

Training Groups
Hillsboro Heat offers 8 different training groups to match your swimmer's needs. A brief definition of each group can be found below and in our team handbook.
NoviceI
Novice I is designed to take individuals that know how to swim comfortably and start the process of turning them into swimmers. The group is primarily instructional in nature. Age range is approximately 5-9 years of age. NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice.
Novice II and III
Novice II and III are designed to fully introduce swimmers to the four competitive strokes. Swimmers will begin to understand that technique is the most important factor in being a successful swimmer. Age range is approximately 7-10. The group is still primarily technique in nature but swim sets and tests will be introduced. NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice.
Developmental (a.k.a.Devy's)
The Developmental group is designed to take the skills learned from Novice II and put them to use to becoming a successful competitive swimmer. The main focus for this group is to get the athlete to be successful at racing in all four competitive strokes. More test sets will be introduced, but for the most part the group will continue to focus on technical proficiency in all strokes, turns, and dives. Age range is approximately 8-12. NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice
Age Group 1
AG 1 is designed as a stepping stone from the Developmental group to Age Group swimming, and will be used as a platform for our more advanced 10 and Under Swimmers; OR for any older, newer athletes that are ready to start swimming some longer practices. Swimmers in this group will continue to focus on technique, but will also be introduced to some mild aerobic conditioning. Age range is approximately 9-13. NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 10 and Unders- at least 4 days/wk; 11-Overs year olds 4-5 days/wk (5th day on invite only to Saturday practices).
Age Group 2
AG 2 is designed to qualify and ready swimmers for competition at
the 11-14 Oregon State Championship. The overall goal will be to get them ready
for the Sectional group in route to qualifying for the Age Sectional
championships. Swimmers in this group will continue to focus on technique with
more and more emphasis on how their stroke count and rate can affect how fast
they swim. Age range is approximately 10-14. NO practice requirements, BUT
parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends,
AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice.
Recommended practice attendance is-- 10-year olds- at least 4 days/wk; 11-12
year olds 4-5 days/wk; 13-14 year olds 5-6 days/wk.
Note: Those Age Group athletes that achieve 2 or more AG Sectional
qualifying standards, may be invited
to train with the Sectional group 2-3 days a week; at 13, achieve 1 AG Sectional
qualifying standard, may be invited to
train with the Sectional group 3 days a week.
Varsity
The Varsity group is designed to allow high school age athletes a place to begin a year round competitive swimming career. Most athletes in this group will be swimmers who have just recently started their swimming careers for their respective high school teams and which to further their development. Swimmers in this group will be worked with to take them where they wish to go in their swimming. Training of swimmers within this group will either take place in the Sectional or Age Group programs dependent on the level of athlete (this will be decided upon by the coaching staff).
Sectional
The Sectional group is designed to get swimmers thinking ‘outside the box.’ In regard to swimming, that box is the state of Oregon. Swimmers in this group will start to make the transition from successful state/age group sectional level athlete to a Senior meet level (Senior Sectional, US Open, Junior Nats, Senior Nats) athlete. Overall this group is designed to prepare the swimmer (if they so desire) for entrance into the National group. Age range is approximately 13-Up. Swimmers in this group are required to attend at least 85% of all practices (please note- when swimmers train at this level, excessive absences make it nearly impossible for the athlete to successfully complete a workout-- this leads to swimmers feeling like they are not good enough for the group; which in turn, causes swimmers self esteem to lower-- which in turn, will cause swimmers to want to miss more practice). Note: Swimmers in the Sectional group that attain a time 2% or less off the Senior Sectional time standard may be invited to train with the National group 3 days a week.
National
The National group is designed to provide an environment where athletes can strive and succeed at any level of National or International competition. As such it is expected, to be within this group, that athletes adhere to all policies and goals set forth by the National coach. Athletes must be at least 14 years of age to be considered for the National group. Being a part of the National group is being a shining representation of what the best of the Hillsboro HEAT is… in and out of the water.
