Squads

Hillsboro HEAT offers 12 different training squads to match your swimmer’s needs.  A brief definition of each group can be found below.

Novice White – Novice White is designed to take individuals that know how to swim comfortably and start the process of turning them into competitive swimmers. The group is primarily instructional in nature. Age range is approximately 6-8 years of age.  Novice White has NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 3 days/wk.

Novice Blue/Black/Silver - Novice Blue/Black/Silver squads are designed to begin proficiency in all four competitive strokes. Swimmers will begin to understand that technique is the most important factor in being a successful competitive swimmer. Age range is approximately 7-9.  Novice Blue/Black/Silver have NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 3 days/wk.

Developmental Silver - The Devy Silver squad is designed to reinforce the skills taught in the Novice Squads and put them to use in training and in stroke refinement to become a proficient competitive swimmer. Age range is approximately 9-10. Devy Silver has NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 3-4 days/wk.

Developmental Gold - The Devy Gold squad is designed to take the skills learned from the Novice Squads and Devy Silver Squad and put them to use in becoming a successful competitive Age Group swimmer. Age range is approximately 8-10.  Devy Gold has NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 4 days/wk.

Junior Silver - Junior Silver is designed to build the skills and fundamentals learned at the novice levels with the additional focus of a seasonal training plan. Swimmers in this squad predominantly focus on technique, but will also be introduced to speed and aerobic conditioning. Age range is approximately 11-14. Junior Silver has NO practice attendance requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 4-5 days/wk.

Junior Gold - Junior Gold is designed to continue the stroke technique goals of Devy Gold and Junior Silver while adding to the quantity and quality of speed and aerobic training. The major expectation for this squad is to qualify and ready swimmers for competition at the 11-14 Oregon State Championship. Age range is approximately 11-12. Junior Gold has NO practice attendance requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 4-6 days/wk.

Pre-Senior Blue - This squad is designed as a stepping-stone to training and competing at the state “senior” level.  This squad requires swimmers to place a very high importance on aerobic conditioning, while still continuing to improve technique and speed in all four competitive strokes.  PS Blue has NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 5-6 days/wk.  Swimmers in this squad are those that have met the required entry requirements AND for boys are in 8th grade or below; for girls are in 7th grade or below.

Pre-Senior Black - This squad is designed as a stepping-stone to training and competing at the state “senior” level.  This squad requires swimmers to place a very high importance on aerobic conditioning, while still continuing to improve technique and speed in all four competitive strokes.  PS Black has NO practice requirements, BUT parents must understand that swimmers that come to practice make more friends, AND improve more rapidly, thus leading to swimmers WANTING to come to practice. Recommended practice attendance is 5-6 days/wk.  Swimmers in this squad are those that have met the required entry prerequisites AND for boys are in 9th grade or above; or for girls are in 8th grade or above.

Senior - Swimmers in this squad will start to make the transition from successful state/age group sectional level athlete to a Senior meet level athlete. Overall the main goal of this squad is to provide an environment that will prepare athletes for collegiate level competition and participation.

Senior Elite – The Senior Elite squad is designed to provide an environment where athletes strive to succeed at any level of National or International competition.
